Sochi Winter Olympic star Rowan Cheshire to open NEW Kidsgrove freestyle slope aimed at inspring the next generation of snowsports stars
Great Britain halfpipe skier Rowan Cheshire will open a brand new freestyle slope and upgrades to the existing slope at Ski Kidsgrove and the North Staffs Ski Club on Saturday 11th October, forming part of a huge weekend of celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of the club and part of Snowsport England’s ‘30 Days of Snowsport’.
In a innovative move, Ski Kidsgrove have built a brand new slope with freestyle features, which will undoubtedly inspire more people to have a go at freestyle skiing and snowboarding and help younger people aspire to be the next Winter Olympic star. As well as the new freestyle park, which will feature a big kicker and rails, the main slope has been refitted with new carpet and extended sideways to incorporate 8 waves. There is also a new button lift, which has been installed between the main slope and the new freestyle area.
The 40th anniversary weekend, which is also part of Snowsport England’s national 30 Days of Snowsport initiative, will not only mark the opening of the new slope, there will also be a busy schedule of entertainment for visitors, including the ‘Oatcake Jam’ on Sunday 12th October.
The 1st annual Oatcake Freestyle Jam will take place on the new slope, marking Ski Kidsgrove as the next place to run big freestyle events. There will be prizes for the top males and females as well as a DJ, BBQ and spot prizes. The event runs from 10-5pm and it is free for spectators and £10 in advance for competitors (£15 on the day). All ages are welcome.
On Saturday, once Rowan Cheshire has cut the ribbon and officially opened the slope, there will be demonstration skiing from instructors, refreshments available all afternoon to toast the Ski Club’s 40th anniversary, and there will be a raffle with the chance to win a pair of Rowan’s skis and a Team GB t-shirt from Sochi.
