Fantastic showing for British skiers at Vail-Beaver Creek Alpine World Ski Championships and podium for Snowboarder Rowan Coultas in Slovakia Big Air
The Delancey British Alpine Ski Team did themselves proud at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail-Beaver Creek with a fantastic 24th place finish for Alex Tilley and a 32nd place for Charlie Guest in the ladies’ Slalom held over the weekend. Charlie Raposo and Jack Gower also finished well in their World Champs debuts with a 34th place finish for Charlie and a 38th place for Jack in the men’s Giant Slalom. Speaking from Vail, Charlie Guest said, “I am extremely happy to have made the Championships here in Vail considering the last couple of months…I have learned some serious lessons that will only set me up better for the next races to come.”
But there was disappointment for Dave Ryding who unfortunately skied out on his first run of the Men’s Slalom at the World Championships, after looking strong at the start. His teammate Charlie Raposo didn’t make it to the final after he DNF in the second run of qualification, having made a great start with his 1st run going from bib 38 to 9th position.
This was after a fantastic performance in last Tuesday’s team event, as the mixed team of Ryding, Guest, Tilley and Raposo got narrowly beaten by Italy in the heats. And on Thursday Alex Tilley and Charlie Guest put in two solid performances in the ladies GS, finishing in 35th and 43rd respectively.
For GB Park and Pipe snowboarder Rowan Coultas, it was another successful weekend with another podium finish as the 17-year old came 2nd at the Slovakia Snowboard Festival Big Air contest. As a TTR event with a high international standard, it is a great result and a second podium for Rowan in under a month. Of the achievement, Rowan said, “I was stoked to get 2nd in Slovakia at the big air competition, it was my first time there and I had a really fun time riding there. I landed my runs in the final which were back double 10 and Cab double 10. It's my second podium this season and so far it's been my best season yet!”
Over in Oestersund, Sweden, Andrew Musgrave finished an excellent 15th place in the men’s 15km Freestyle, as the British Senior Nordic Ski Team returned to Cross Country World Cup action. Posy Musgrave and Andrew Young also put in strong performances, although were unable to break the top 50 over the weekend.
In the Ski Cross World Cup in Are, Sweden, Liz Stevenson finished 12th place in a small field at the penultimate event before World Cup Finals, following the cancellation of Squaw Valley last week.
At the Universiade in Sierra Nevada, Delancey Alpine team racer Alice MacAulay followed her fantastic 14th place in the GS earlier in the week, with a 26th place finish in the ladies’ Slalom. Nick Moynihan unfortunately did not manage to complete his run in the Slalom but is looking forward to further training and heading in to his next set of races.
The English Alpine Championships in Bormio is also taking place this week, running through until 19th February. With great conditions so far, British team racers Darcie Mead, Bethany Widdup and Ollie Davies have already put in strong performances finishing in the top 10 in the Slalom.
