Europa Cup podiums for Koyander, top 30 in Schladming for Ryding and Norwegian Championships kick off well for Musgrave
It has been a busy week for British skiers and snowboarders with a jam-packed schedule across the different disciplines. Highlights of the week so far include a 2nd and 3rd place for Ellie Koyander at the Airolo Moguls Europa Cup and a 9th place in the first event of the Norwegian Cross Country Ski Championships for Andrew Musgrave yesterday. The crazy Schladming World Cup night slalom took place earlier in the week which saw Dave Ryding clock up another top 30 result, with a 28th place finish. At the European Youth Olympic Festival this week, Ayla Thidling and Glen Ironside took a top 10 result in the Snowboard Cross mixed team event and Alpine skiers Kirsty Guest and Zak Vinter brought in top 30 results for Team GB. Lynne Gray also earned two personal best results in the Cross Country girls 5km and 7.5km events this week.
Gray said: “There was a much better atmosphere in the race today and I got really excited when people would call out ‘GB’ when I went passed by. There were loads of union flags out on the course too and my dad had even made a big sign with ‘Go Lynne’ on it, which I loved. I really enjoyed today.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Burton European Open, which features British snowboarders Aimee Fuller, Jamie Nicholls and Billy Morgan, which was due to start yesterday, is now on course to start today after heavy snow made it impossible for the competition to begin yesterday. Cross Country skier Andrew Musgrave returns to the Norwegian Championships after his 2nd place overall finish last year. Taking 9th spot in the 15km Freestyle yesterday, he continues his 2015 campaign over the weekend. The Cross Country World Junior & U23 Championships in Almaty kicks off on Sunday with Andrew Young representing in the U23 category, James Clugnet, Sam Cairns and Gregor Young in the Men’s Juniors and Sarah Hale and Fern Cates in the Ladies’ Juniors.
For the Delancey British Alpine Ski Team, the biggest event on their winter calendar, the World Championships in Vail-Beaver Creek, begins next week with Dave Ryding, Jack Gower, Charlie Raposo, Alex Tilley and Charlie Guest all in action. Before the World Championships Alex Tilley, Charlie Guest and Natalia Harte will compete at the San Candido Europa Cup on 4th and 5th February, with Alex and Charlie looking to use them as preparation races ahead of their first World Championships.
Lake Placid, USA plays host to the Aerials World Cup today, with British skier Lloyd Wallace competing in his first event since his fantastic 15th at the World Championships.
Following double podiums, Ellie Koyander and team mates will compete at the final day of the Airolo Moguls Europa Cup today, and will go on to compete at the next Moguls Europa Cup, Chiesa in Valmalenco, 3rd – 4th February.
