David Ryding and Charlotte Guest take Gold in the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships Slalom
On the sixth day of the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships in Meribel, overcast conditions tested the mettle of the Mens and Ladies teams.
Battling through the gates, GB racer David Ryding had a tricky first run, but swiftly tightened his grasp on gold with a sensational second run. Claiming the Mens National Championship (NC) Slalom title in his first and only race of the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships with an impressive total time of 1.48.12, Dave commented: “I’m feeling a mixture of relief and satisfaction, in the end it was a good result, one good run and one pretty disappointing run, but you can’t dominate them all! It was raining, dark and cloudy today, so not the best conditions but you have to race in everything, that’s ski racing, it can be bullet ice or soft and bumpy like today.”
Also on the podium today - just over 4 seconds behind Dave - was Nicholas Moynihan with a total time of 1.52.52 and yesterday’s Mens champion Charlie Raposo, just a fraction of a second behind (1.52.65.)
Meanwhile, yesterday’s Ladies champion Charlotte Guest, continued her reign, beating her British and international competitors with a total time of 1.48.43 in the UVEX Ladies Slalom. Charlotte was joined on the podium by Natalie Beattie, who came in 2nd with a total time of 1.51.44, and closely followed by Rachelle Rogers with 1.52.33 in 3rd. With UVEX sponsoring the Ladies Slalom, Managing Director John Gill was present to award the UVEX Ladies NC Slalom Trophy to Charlotte.
Despite the challenging conditions of the morning, Charlotte Guest said: “I’m feeling really good about today, I usually manage to mess it up somehow down this hill so to get two consistent runs together feels really good. Even though it was raining heavily this morning, I was surprised how nice the hill still was. It was hard snow and even after the 30 girls came down there wasn’t much in there. You usually would expect worse. I’m going to race the junior races over the next couple of days, a couple of races in Austria and then have some downtime before conditioning starts.”
This is the 11th year of the 2014 Delancey British National Alpine Championships, the biggest event in the British Alpine ski racing calendar. Sponsored by Delancey - Principal Sponsor of British Ski and Snowboard - for the 4th year, the Senior and Junior Championships take place from 30 March to 7 April followed by the Under 16 and Under 14 Championships from 8 April to 11 April.
