Cara Brown lifts the Sir John Ritblat Victor Ludorum Trophy as she claims overall victory at the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships
Over 100 of the world’s best Alpine racers hit the Meribel Stade in bright sunshine today - as they warmed-up for the final day of the Senior and Junior races at the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships in Meribel.
Racing through a busy schedule to complete the Ladies GS and Mens Slalom in time for the close of the Championships, the British team pulled out all the stops and achieved some excellent results.
In the U18 GS, Darcie Mead sped to victory with a total time of 2.20.80, followed by Sofia Iglina in second with 2.23.53 and Honor Clissold in third with 2.24.35. And in the U21 GS, Charlie Guest took her fourth gold title of the Championships with a total time of 2.16.09, 3 seconds ahead of silver medal winner Alice Macaulay with 2.19.49, who was closely followed by overall champions Cara Brown with 2.20.27.
Despite coming third in the GS, Cara Brown performed exceptionally throughout the Championships, and was awarded the Sir John Ritblat Victor Ludorum Trophy for gaining more points than any other competitor. She was also chosen for the Kirsteen McGibbon Memorial Award. Talking about this huge achievement, Cara Brown commented: “I’m feeling really great, I’m so happy with all the wins. In winning the overall title, I was consistent, even though I wasn’t on the top step of the podium everytime this week, I put down a lot of good, consistent runs and I was happy with my skiing this week.”
With the warm, sticky condition, the Men’s Slalom was slightly delayed, but racing in bib number 8, Nick Moynihan stormed his first run with a time of 48.24, putting him in joint first across both the British and International fields, going into the second run. Nick skied an impressive second run in 45.43 seconds, making a combined time of 1.33.71 winning the Men’s Slalom U21 title. He was followed by Kieran Norris, Dunmow, with a combined time of 1.37.52 and Gregory Saunders, Savoie, finishing with a total time of 1.38.13.
In the U18 category, Billy Major from Savoie, France, reached the top of the podium with a combined time of 1.36.34, 1st run, 50.54 and 2nd run 45.80. He managed to beat Euan Kick, Argyll, and Robert Poth, Hertfordshire, who came in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Billy also won the U18 British Combined title, taking home the Rossendale Ski Club Cup.
This is the 11th year of the 2014 Delancey British National Alpine Championships, the biggest event in the British Alpine ski racing calendar. Sponsored by Delancey - Principal Sponsor of British Ski and Snowboard - for the 4th year, the Senior and Junior Championships take place from 30 March to 7 April followed by the Under 16 and Under 14 Championships from 8 April to 11 April.
