Alpine Announcement on EYOWF Updates
Today BSS provides what it hopes will be the final communication surrounding selection procedures for the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival due to be held in January. There is an update on a revised date for the selection meeting and its likely implications for race meetings that will be taken into account. This move in the selection meeting date also entails an adjustment to the timeframe allowed for appeals. There is also the anticipated update relating to the ‘B’ selection criteria.
Selection Meeting.
In response to comments from the recently established Coaches Advisory Group, BSS revisited the timing of the selection meeting. BSS asked for an extension to the deadline date for nominations to the BOA which has been granted. With this in hand the selection meeting will now take place on Wednesday 17th December, with final nominations going from the BSS Board to the BOA on Monday 22nd December. It will be the BOA that confirms final selections.
This change in date should allow the selectors to include a number of extra race meetings, and particularly the CIT meetings at Les Contamines and Leogang respectively. In order to allow this later date, BSS will also be slightly shortening the timeframe allowed for appeals. We now hope to notify athletes on the long list of proposed nominations by 10am on Thursday 18th December. Any appeals must be lodged with the BSS office by 4pm on Friday 19th December, along with the required £250 bond. All other provisions of the appeal process will remain in place.
‘B’ Criteria
The Coaches Advisory Group was also clear that there could be significant problems related to the designation of specific selection races, including the risk of cancellation of these races. Accordingly BSS will use all FIS point results available at the time of the selection meeting in order to select any athletes under the ‘B’ criteria. Given the possibility that some of the 1998 athletes may not have scores in both technical disciplines at such an early stage of the season, the selectors will rank 1998 athletes according to the sum of their lowest two technical results available at the time of selection. Other provisions will remain in place, including the obligation on selectors to provide a written explanation of why any athlete selected under ‘B’ criteria is worth their place, and the need to provide specific comparison with any athlete that is qualified through the ‘A’ criteria and not put forward as a result of being replaced by an athlete qualified through the use of the ‘B’ criteria.
