The Delancey British Alpine Ski Team put in a fantastic performance in Tuesday’s team event at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail-Beaver Creek, just being nudged out by Italy in the heats, but showing the world they are a force to be reckoned with.
The mixed team of Dave Ryding, Alex Tilley, Charlie Guest and Charlie Raposo reveled in the chance to race together, with Ryding saying it was “a great day racing and a really proud feeling skiing with GBR across my chest! We came so close to beating Italy and we really showed the future is bright for British skiing. I thought we gave a great showing for Team BSS and on another day we could have easily gone through…it was great to ski as a team though, and I really hope we can do it again in two years.”
Last night saw Jack Gower secure 2nd place in the qualification race for today’s GS, meaning he will join the top 50 GS skiers in the world, including Charlie Raposo, in today’s GS final which kicks off at 17.15 UK time. Gower said: “I’ve been working very intensely with a great team over the last year to achieve certain goals. The World Champs will be a great chance to see how everything is going in comparison to the best in the world. It is a true honour to be there.”
Earlier in the day Alex Tilley and Charlie Guest put in two solid performances in the ladies GS, finishing in 35th and 43rd respectively – a particularly remarkable achievement for Guest who has recently returned from a back injury sustained at the start of the season.
Alex Tilley and Charlie Guest return to action on Saturday, both competing in the Ladies Slalom, which starts at 17.15 UK time. Then Sunday is the big day for Dave Ryding and team mate Charlie Raposo as they take on the World Championship Slalom course in Beaver Creek, with racing starting at 17.15 UK time. Ryding said ahead of the weekend: “It’s one race every two years, my 4th World Champs, I will enjoy the occasion” and Charlie Raposo commented: “Looking forward to pushing the limits and seeing how it ends up.”

Over in Sweden, we see the British Senior Nordic Ski Team return to action at the Oestersund Cross Country World Cup. Andrew Musgrave, Andrew Young and Posy Musgrave will compete in the Sprint Classic on Saturday and then on Sunday, the men will race in the 15km Freestyle and Posy in the Ladies 10km Freestyle.
Are, Sweden is the location for the next Ski Cross World Cup with Liz Stevenson competing in the qualifiers today, with two World Cup races on both Saturday and Sunday.
At the Universiade in Sierra Nevada this week, Delancey Alpine team racer Alice MacAulay finished in a fantastic 14th place in the ladies’ Giant Slalom, coming from bib 50. Alice races in the ladies’ Slalom today, starting in bib 43. Nick Moynihan has also been representing GBR in Spain, unfortunately DNF’ing the 2nd run in the men’s Giant Slalom yesterday, but with the chance to race again in the Slalom on Sunday.
