Tilley & Baldwin continue their winning run at the Delancey British Alpine Ski Championships in Meribel
Alex Tilley and TJ Baldwin continue their respective unbroken title runs at the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships in Meribel, France today where they lifted the Women's and Men's Super Combi championships. The Super Combi challenges speed and technical skills across a fast Super G followed immediately by a demanding single slalom run, which was contested in rising temperatures more reminiscent of the Med than Meribel.
Tilley remains on imperious form, actually winning the Junior Super G title as well as the overall Super Combi in which she aggregated a lead of 2.43 seconds over the two runs ahead of Charlotte Guest.
"I am happy with the way I skied in the Super G," said Aberdeen's Tilley, "Second run, in the slalom I focused on being solid rather than risking anything. And it is another title and I am really chuffed with that, and that takes the weight off for the next two disciplines. But really Slalom and Giant Slalom are where I am strongest, so I really want to do well in them, and hopefully be gunning for the overall title. I would be delighted with that."
Baldwin completes his hat trick of titles, building a gap of 3.70 seconds over Torquay's second placed Jai Geyer over the combined Super G and Slalom runs. In the Junior Super G, Ascot's Roy-Alexander Steudle who is mainly based out of Maria-Alm in Austria, secured the Junior title, but enjoying a useful check in against TJ Baldwin who remains Britain's top international speed disciplines skier.
Steudle moved to Whistler, Canada when he was very young, then to England for his education, but carried on ski racing with Ambition Racing's Marc Telling. Presently he is based in Maria Alm, Austria training with Josef Schild, brother of Marlies Schild, the Olympic Slalom silver medallist.
"I like to be here and compare with TJ and see what he is doing and show him what I am doing. The Super G run did not feel that good, and I made a few big mistakes but I can assume that everyone else had a few mistakes too. The slalom run was not that good and my timing was off, so I am now a bit worried if I can pull something out the bag over the next few days."
"Speed is going well for me at the moment. My skiing is pretty aggressive which is what I wanted, but that is the approach I was looking for so I am happy. On the technical side it has been tough doing a lot of races in Austria where the standard is really high and you are having to start from the back of the field, trying to get up and improve my ranking points. But in general I am very happy that I have a good feeling on my skis at the moment, that has come back for me.
GS, Super G and Downhill are where I have been trying to make progress forwards. I still have four giant slaloms left this season so I am hoping to do well in them and make some results. I love the sport and since I was little I have wanted to race World Cup and qualify for the Olympics."
