Craig Macfie 1987-2011
On Saturday 19th November, Craig Macfie (24) passed away.
British Ski and Snowboard were greatly saddened to hear of the untimely passing of ex British Ski Team member, Craig Macfie.
It would be fair to say skiing was a major part of Craig's life. Edinburgh born Craig spent his youth ski racing as a member of LSRA and Aberdeen Ski Club. After being selected for the Scottish Ski Team, he then went onto race and train full time as part of the British Development Team for 3 years. His love for the sport did not end there. As he made the transition from an athlete to student athlete, he began a degree at Aberdeen University. However, a transfer to Oregon University was the next step as he decided to continue training and racing along with coaching. Craig continued to be very much involved in British Skiing, coaching with BSA and LSRA during his time off from studies. He represented Great Britain at the 2009 and 2011 World University Games and was due to race on the 2012 BUSC Anglo Swiss Team.
Craig was due to return to the UK in December after finishing classes in Oregon. His brother Ali Macfie posted on his Facebook wall 'his bicycle was hit by a drunk driver and he never regained consciousness'. As news of his death came to light, British ski racers from past and present wrote messages on his Facebook wall…

"Craig had an amazing zest for life. He was an inspiration to many through his years in British Skiing. One thing that was always clear is that he had a natural feel and need for speed on skis, although he did have a fair number of DNF's, his passion for the sport always shone through and he was always smiling. It is clear from all the messages that he will be sorely missed by all.

A memorial service will be held at 9.45am on Saturday the 26th November at the Mortonhall Crematorium, Edinburgh. The family hope that as many, friends of Craig, as possible will be able to attend. The memorial is planned to be a celebration of his life, so no black tie or flowers. Donations will be split between Campaign Against Drink Driving and World Wildlife Fund.
