British Children’s Alpine Championship - Thursday, 5th April 2012
Robert Poth said that when he woke up this morning he didn't think there would be a race today. He was not alone; overnight rain and low cloud made conditions look very unpromising. However, the ESF worked miracles on the course and Robert couldn't believe how smooth it was as he skied into first place after the two races of the Boys' Giant Slalom. His winning first race time of 40.12 seconds was just good enough to beat Oliver Davies into second place despite him posting the fastest time in the second race. Jordon Fellows was third just 0.07 seconds behind on overall time for both races.
The best Children 2 boy was Tom Chambet, a member of Scottish Ski Club who lives and trains near La Clusaz. He managed to win both races ahead of Matthew Ray from Kandahar and Scott Buchan also from SSC and BSA.
The start time of the Boys' Giant Slalom on the upper section of the Piste du Corby was delayed to allow the salt to work and harden the snow but the Girls' Slalom on the Stade at the bottom of the slope started on time at 08.30 despite the amount of work required to pull it into shape for racing. Jessica Anderson from BSA was the overall winner while Megan Jenkins from the same club had the best time in the second race. Sofia Iglina won the first race just six hundredths of a second ahead of Jessica but had to be content with third place overall. Jessica was delighted with her win today, having crashed out of the Super-G on Tuesday she was suffering from a bruised knee but managed to "ski through the pain" in order to triumph in today's Slalom.
In the Children 2 age category Alicja Krahelski (BSA) was all smiles on the podium as she had won both races and the overall. She had found both courses quite challenging but was justifiably pleased with her performance. Rhona Price from SSC was second and Megan Riley from Kandahar was third.
Tomorrow, Friday is the last day of the Delancey British Alpine Ski Championships and it will feature the Children Boys' Slalom and the Girl's Giant Slalom. The weather forecast is looking promising so we hope for a really good finale to two weeks of excellent competition here in Meribel.
