The Simpsons season premiere proves to be a European success

Neil Simpson has defied his age with a pair of impressive performances alongside brother and guide Andrew Simpson at the season-opening Para Alpine Europa Cup races in Landgraaf, Netherlands.

The pair claimed the final spot on visually-impaired slalom podium in yesterday’s race, but today they went two-better with a breakthrough win after recording the fastest time in each of the three runs. James Luetchford and guide Alice Luetchford were fourth, while Michael Kear and guide Louise Harrison were in third going into the final run before unfortunately recording a disqualification.

“The primary focus with Neil this year is to get him World Cup-qualified as quickly as possible – that’s the major mission right now,” said coach John Clark. “Then there’s the target of getting him qualified for the World Championships in January. It’s a hugely ambitious task but he couldn’t have started the season on a better note.

“He’s only 15-years-old and this will be his first full year of competition. He still has school commitments and his brother and guide Andrew is also studying at University, so we need to make the most of every competition he is at.

“To pick up a podium in his first Europa Cup race yesterday was great. I really felt Neil had that in him, but to stand on the top spot today is a real credit. He can’t stop smiling, but hopefully it’s a feeling that will become more and more familiar to him.”
