Ski Jumper Sam Bolton takes U16 Gold and U20 Silver in Park City Summer Event

British Ski Jumper Sam Bolton, has been making waves at the 19th Springer Tournee competition in Park City, Utah, USA. Last Thursday he claimed top of the podium in the Under 16 (HS68) age group, ahead of 28 other male competitors. He jumped a distance of 65 metres in his first attempt, and then 67 metres in his second jump, giving him the best average distance overall.

In the Under 20 (HS100) category, Sam jumped a distance of 95.5 metres in his first jump, and 97.5 metres in his second. This earned him joint 2nd place after the winner landed a massive 101 metres in his second attempt. This was a great result for Sam in a field of 38 other competitors - many of whom having years more jumping experience - at one of the biggest summer events for Junior Ski Jumpers.

His fantastic competition results, together with his performance during training, has made him quite a celebrity amongst the North American ski jumping community last week. The 14-year old, who is based in Canada, first tried ski jumping when he was only 8 at the Canada Olympic Park (site of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics) and since then has been competing all over North America, as well as in Europe.

Fellow British athlete, Robert Lock (19), was also competing in Park City in the Large Hill Ski Jumping Championships (HS134) on Saturday and finished 15th overall in a field of 34 jumpers. He landed his first jump with a distance of 105.5 metres, then 109.5 metres in his second attempt.

The Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Sierra Nevada finished on a high for GB Park and Pipe yesterday, as James 'Woodsy' Woods and Isabel Atkin both claimed bronze medals in the Ski Slopestyle Finals.

Woodsy was leading after putting down a fantastic second run of 90.40, but was overtaken in the final run by USA's McRae Williams who won gold and Gus Kenworthy who took silver. In the women's Ski Slopestyle, Isabel Atkin pulled a fantastic third run out of the bag to climb up the rankings and take bronze behind French skier Tess Ledeux, who took gold, and Emma Dahlstrom from Sweden, who claimed silver.

For the other GB Park and Pipe skiers in the Slopestyle competition, Madi Rowlands finished 17th in the ladies' competition and in the men’s event Tyler Harding finished 21st overall, with Cal Sandieson in 35th after making semis, and Mike Rowlands in 48th place.

On Friday evening, Rowan Cheshire showed that she is back to being one of the World’s best female Halfpipe skiers as she finished sixth overall in the World Championships. After qualifying for the final, Cheshire showed that she is back at a level where she can challenge again for world-class podiums. Madi Rowlands finished in 11th place and Molly Summerhayes in 15th position. For the men, Murray Buchan was the highest finishing Brit in 16th place and Pete Speight finished in 18th position.

GB Park and Pipe Head Ski Coach Pat Sharples congratulated the GB Park and Pipe team at the end of the Championships: "This is an amazing finish to a tough week of competition. I couldn't be more proud of the whole team. Everyone came out and killed it and rode to the very best of their abilities."

In the Snowboard Big Air, Aimee Fuller landed a new trick in qualification, narrowly missing out on finals and finishing 18th overall. In the men’s competition Matt McCormick finished 27th overall and Jamie Nicholls in 48th place. Billy Morgan and Rowan Coultas withdrew due to injuries.

GB Park and Pipe Pathway snowboarders Billy Cockrell, Fin Bremner, Henry Shackleton, Glen Ironside, and Cerys Allen were all in action at the Slopestyle and Halfpipe Europa Cup in Laax, Switzerland. Cerys Allen impressed in the Slopestyle finishing in 5th place, and in the men’s competition, Ironside had the best result for GB Park and Pipe, finishing in 27th place with Shackleton in 39th and Cockrell in 48th place. In the Halfpipe Glen Ironside finished in 32nd place.

Glen Ironside will today compete in the World Junior Snowboard Halfpipe Championships in Laax. The Halfpipe event has been brought forward after being due to run at the end of the April.

Delancey British Alpine Team

Dave Ryding pulled out a remarkable second run in the World Cup Finals in Aspen, Colorado moving up 12 places in the second run in yesterday’s Slalom to finish eighth overall. In what has been an amazing season for Ryding, yesterday’s result meant Ryding will finish the season ranked 8th overall in the World Standings for Slalom.

Alex Tilley was in action in the North America Cup this weekend, claiming a podium finish in Saturday’s Slalom in Val St-Come, Canada and two 5th places in the GS yesterday and Friday’s Slalom. She will race again today in Garceau in another GS.

At the Europa Cup Finals in Innichen, Italy, Nick Moynihan finished 36th in Saturday’s GS with Charlie Raposo DNF. In yesterday’s Slalom FIS race, Laurie Taylor and Nick Moynihan both DNF.

British Nordic

Andrew Musgrave concluded his season on a high after finishing 9th in the Cross Country ‘mini-tour’ in Quebec after the 15km Pursuit Free, and clocking the 2nd fastest time of the day yesterday. Andrew Young finished in 27th overall and Callum Smith in 56th – a World Cup PB. In Saturday’s 15km Classic Mass Start Musgrave finished 20th, with Young in 34th and Smith in 60th position. Annika Taylor also finished her season off well, finishing 47th in the 10km Pursuit Free. This was after her 40th place finish in Saturday’s 10km Classic Mass Start.

British Telemark

Jasmin Taylor continued her phenomenal season, taking another podium for Great Britain, finishing third in the Classic at the Telemark World Championships in La Plagne, France. She was also 5th in the Parallel Sprint and 10th in the Sprint yesterday. Taylor’s team mate Naila Cardwell finished 9th in the Parallel Sprint, 17th in the Classic and 16th in the Sprint. In the men’s competition, Louis Hatchwell clocked the best result of the World Championships finishing in 22nd position in the Classic. Sion Bingham was 31st. In the Sprint, Alec Dixon finished in 36th position, Sion Bingham in 39th and Louis Hatchwell in 43rd place.

British Ski and Snowboard Cross

Pam Thorburn was in action this weekend at the Ski Cross event at the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Sierra Nevada, finishing in 19th position overall to conclude the season.

British Snowboard Cross were in action at the Europa Cup in Lenk, Switzerland. For the ladies Anna Richardson finished in 17th position in Friday’s race and for the men Bradley Gaulter was 53rd, Paul Moralee was 62nd, Brandon Cain was 70th and Rory Ewart was 76th. Saturday’s race was cancelled due to weather.

British Ski Cross athletes were also in Europa Cup action in Mora, Sweden. For the ladies, Alannah Lawrie came 10th in both Saturday and Sunday’s race, and Emma Peters was 11th and 12th respectively. For the men, Ollie Davies finished 27th on Saturday and 17th on Sunday, and Finlay Davies finished in 42nd and 43rd respectively.

British Moguls

At the Europa Cup in Jyvaskyla, Finland, Makayla Gerken Schofield impressed just missing the podium, finishing in fourth place in yesterdays’ Dual Moguls competition. In the men’s Dual Moguls competition, Thomas Gerken Schofield finished in 8th with Will Feneley in 10th place. All the athletes will compete again today.

British Ski Jumping

Robert and Jake Lock, British Ski Jumping twins based in Park City, competed in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup in Chaikovsky, Russia. Robert finished in 39th place and Jake 40th on Saturday and Jake in 41st place and Robert 42nd on Sunday.

Ski Jumping Nordic

Over the coming weeks we catch up with our Team Athletes and Coaches to find out how they will be spending their summer. During this series we will cover injuries, rehab, training camps, new programmes and chasing winter in the Southern Hemisphere!

This week we speak to British Ski Jumping twins Robert and Jake Lock!

How did you get into ski jumping?

Robert- I got into ski jumping because of a school friend who had started and asked us to join him. That was 12 years ago when I lived in Calgary and I haven’t stopped since.

Jake- One of my class mates started ski jumping in Calgary and we joined him on a summer camp for one week and have been jumping ever since.

You train in Park City with the US Team, how’s that going?

Robert- It’s going very well, we mainly train with the local club in Park City, but whenever we go abroad we go with the US Team.

Jake- When the US Team is here in Park City we end up training at the same time. They are all encouraging and we know each other quite well. We travel with them when we compete and train overseas.

Have you been able to take a break over the summer? If so how did you spend it?

Robert- Not really, and the little breaks I’ve had were just to relax and to study how I could be jumping better once I got back. I help coach the younger kids so when I am not training I am usually helping them.

Jake- Since ski jumping is a year round sport, we get very little down time. Since we have finished school we are working part time to help pay for our training, equipment etc , so when we do have a break in training we are usually working. The summer season is actually a great time to improve our jumping as we have consistent conditions on which to train.

What are your aspirations for the coming season?

Robert- Right now I’m competing at FIS Cup levels and for the upcoming season I should be competing at the next level up at Continental Cup. My aspiration would be to compete at a World Cup level this next season.

Jake- We already have FIS points from last season and I would love to add to those with some more competitions and also be able to compete at the next level up at the Continental Cup level. The World Juniors for ski jumping are being held here in Park City next February and I am really excited to take part in those again hopefully.

Today sees snowboarder Billy Morgan and skier James ‘Woodsy’ Woods tackle the Big Air at the inaugural X Games in Oslo. Downtown Toyen will host one of the largest jumps in X Games history. With heats beginning today, just six riders from each discipline will go through to Saturday’s finals.

Next Wednesday is the start of the Burton US Open in Vail, Colorado, where GB Park and Pipe snowboarder, Katie Ormerod, will be looking to continue her recent success in Slopestyle. Qualification is Wednesday 2nd March with finals running on Thursday 4th March.

British Ski Cross

Emily Sarsfield is in PyeongChang, South Korea, for the Ski Cross World Cup, which is also an Olympic Ski Cross test event. In qualification today she finished in 14th place, making it through to the top 16 final which runs on Sunday.

Emma Peters is competing in the Ski Cross Europa Cup in Grasgehren this Saturday and Sunday, and is hoping to secure a result in Germany.

British Nordic Team

The Nordic World Under 23 and Junior Championships continue in Rasnov, Romania for Lynne Gray, Annika Taylor, Sarah Hale, Duncan Gibb and James Clugnet.

The best results so far have come from Annika Taylor who was 30th in the U23 10k Freestyle and 34th in the U23 Ladies’ 10k Classic. Sarah Hale came 40th and 47th respectively in the same two races.

Other results for British Nordic: include two 69th place finishes for James Clugnet and an 84th and 89th for Duncan Gibb in the Junior Men’s 15k Freestyle and Junior Men’s 10k Classic.

In the Junior Ladies’ 5k Classic, Lynne Gray came in 77th position.

British Ski Jumping

Young British ski jumping twins Robert Lock and Jake Lock have also been competing at the Championships. Robert finished 52nd place and Jake in 56th place.

Delancey British Alpine Ski Team

Downhill training was cancelled yesterday at the World Junior Alpine Championships in Sochi, Russia. The next training is scheduled for today where Billy Major will hope to get some practice in ahead of Saturday’s Downhill race. Then both Billy and Charlie Raposo will compete in Sunday’s Super G, the Alpine Combined on Monday, the Slalom on Thursday and the GS next Saturday.

World Nordic U23 and Junior Championships Team Announcement

Cross Country Ski Jumping Nordic

We are pleased to announce the team for the 2016 FIS Nordic World Junior and U23 Championships in Rasnov, Romania. Nordic comprises Cross Country skiing and Ski Jumping.

Cross Country

It has been a historic season so far for the British Nordic Ski Team and hopefully this can continue at the championships in Romania.

Coach Alex Standen – “I’m delighted to be taking this team to the Championships in Romania as it is one of the major events this season. This team has a blend of very experienced skiers who have competed at the very highest level and those just starting out on their championship career. Hopefully this mix can help all the athletes perform above their expectations. The championships is one of our major markers in the development of the athletes and all our current Olympians have competed at the championships in previous seasons.”

Annika Taylor

YOB: 1993

Club: Sugar Bowl Academy

After a successful start to Annika’s first ever World Cup season, including the Tour de Ski, Annika is looking to target the U23 championships as one of the major competitions of the season. This is her last season as U23 and is well placed to achieve Britain’s best ever results at the U23 championships.

As part of the Elite squad Annika has been heavily supported by Sport Scotland this season and looking to use this support to perform at championships.

Sarah Hale

YOB: 1995

Club: IFK Mora

Having experienced her first ever World Championships in Falun last season, Sarah is looking to progress in her first season at U23 level. Sarah has just started University in Sweden and is excited to see how a new training group has managed to help improve her as a skier.

James Clugnet

YOB: 1996

Club: Highland Nordic

James is in his final year of junior and has shown some great results at the start of the season, breaking the 100 FIS point barrier for the first time. His main event will be the Skate Sprint although he will also be competing in the Classic time trial and the 20km Skiathlon. This will be James’s 3rd and final World Junior championships where he is hoping to get close or break into the top 30.

Lynne Gray

YOB: 1998

Club: Huntly Nordic ski club

With 3 years left as a junior, Lynne will be one of the youngest in the competition but her results this season has showed the potential to compete at this level. She's currently balancing studying for her 6th year advance Highers with racing internationally.

Lynne is looking to build on her first major Championships, the European Youth Olympics, last year and continue to progress up the field.

Duncan Gibb

YOB: 1997

Club: Huntly Nordic ski club

Having finished school in May, Duncan has been gaining more race experience than ever before this season and believes this will hold him in good stead for his 2nd World Junior championships. His main event will be the Sprint competition where he has had his best results. In the build up to the Championships Duncan will be training and racing with some of the Elite skiers under the watchful eye of head coach Roy Young and Sport Scotland support staff.

Ski Jumping

Great Britain will be represented by Jake and Robert Lock, Ski Jumping twins who currently live out in the USA, training with the US Ski Jumping Team. Before the World Juniors, Jake and Robert will focus on training in Park City and then head up to Whistler for the Canadian FIS cup at the beginning of February, followed by the FIS cup in Wisconsin.

British Ski Jumping twins score excellent results at US National competition

Ski Jumping

18-year old twins Robert and Jake Lock produced excellent results by finishing 8th and 15th respectively in the open section of the 2015 US national competition in windy conditions on a K90 hill on 11 October. The day before though saw Jake finishing in first place and Robert fifth in the junior competition on the same hill. The results showed the benefit of following a pathway programme since they began ski jumping aged 9 years in Calgary, Canada.

Members of the Park City Nordic Ski Club, Utah, since 2008, the twins are coached by ex-US ski jumper, Blake Hughes. Blake is taking a well-planned approach to their development and entry into FIS Cup competitions in Europe and N. America this coming season. A key target event will be entry as GB athletes in the World Junior Nordic Ski Championships in February 2016, providing Robert and Jake compete well in the FIS Cup in Norway and the Czech Republic before Christmas.

The healthy rivalry between the twins is a very positive spur to their determination to become the best jumpers they can be. Jake’s current longest jump in training stands at 129 mtrs, while Robert’s is 130 mtrs, not forgetting of course that style also matters in competition. Their determination is admirably matched by the support of their parents.
