Championship Ski & Snowboard League Winners Announced

Today has marked the release of the final round of matches in the inaugural Championship Ski and Snowboard League. Over the course of the last 5 months, 6 ski and 6 snowboard teams have battled it out to be crowned League Champions, with the winners announced today.

The first ski edit saw Milton Keynes take on Stoke, with CSS making special thanks to Milton Keynes for their quality of footage throughout the season and to Stoke for their creative EX tricks. Stoke came out on top, leaving them in 3rd place in the overall standings. The next match featured Aberdeen Vs Tamworth, unfortunately Tamworth were unable to submit their final edit and therefore had to forfeit. This left Aberdeen with a final win, they and were also the only team to consistently feature two female riders. The final edit saw Hemel taking on Bearsden. With Hemel currently leading the overall standings but Bearsden on their tail, it was a winner takes all final with Bearsden nipping Hemel being pipped at the post by Bearsden. Bearsden were crowned the winning title in Championship Skiing 2016 whilstith Hemel finisheding second in the standings.

With the ski results confirmed, the attention turned to the snowboarders. The first match of Aberdeen Vs Braehead showed that consistency can be key, with Braehead taking the win using the same team they had fielded in each round. The next match saw Tamworth again having to forfeit the round, meaning a final win for Milton Keynes whose team featured a welcome return for Josh Ogden who was back on snow following an injury during CSS earlier in the season. The final was again a head to head battle between the two top teams with Hemel needing a win for a chance to draw with Bearsden in top spot. However, Bearsden once again pulled it out of the bag in their final match and took top spot with their second podium of the day! With Braehead and Hemel now on equal points, the runner up was decided by the team who had gained the most points from trick scores. This saw Braehead take second place with 2696.70 points over Hemel’s 2534.65.

Championship Ski and Snowboard features six snowboard and six ski teams from slopes across the UK going head to head in a league, with teams submitting videos of tricks from four of their team members for each round.

In every round, each team is matched against another team and their videos, including their best kicker, rail and EX (execution) trick for each rider, will be marked by a panel of world class judges, with one of the teams coming out on top or it being called a draw. Each team must include a "Young Gun" (a rider under the age of 15) and a female rider.

Championship Ski and Snowboard is made up by teams from Stoke Ski Centre (ski), The Snow Centre Hemel Hempstead (ski & snowboard), Aberdeen Snowsports Centre (ski & snowboard), Bearsden Ski and Snowboard Club (ski & snowboard). SnowDome Tamworth (ski & snowboard), Snozone Milton Keynes (ski & snowboard) and Snow Factor Braehead (snowboard).

The world class judging panel consists of GB Park and Pipe rider Katie Summerhayes, Josh Fawcett, Dave Young and Bobby Taylor on the ski side and Laura Berry, Kevin Mills, Colum Mytton and Andy Mills on the snowboard side. The overall scoring process is then overseen by the head judges who are GB Park and Pipe coaches Hamish McKnight, Pat Sharples, Jack Shackleton and Jamie Matthew.

Micro Machines & Battle Royale results out and Final round of CSS released Wednesday

GB Park and Pipe’s new concept in snowsports competition, Championship Ski and Snowboard (CSS), is wrapping up this week after a hugely successful summer at slopes across the UK, which has included 12 teams battling it out in 5 matches each over 5 months.

The nationwide competition, which aims to grow and nurture young British freestyle talent, is the first snowsports competition of its kind in the world, and has seen 64 snowboarders and 70 skiers take part in the competition, with each team uploading their videos of tricks after each match, aiming to come out top of the CSS snowboard or ski league.

Today also sees the videos go live from the two one-off CSS competitions, CSS Micro Machines and CSS Battle Royale, launched back in July in response to the huge demand to be part of CSS from UK indoor and dry slopes across the country.

CSS Battle Royale is aimed at slopes that were not able to be part of the CSS League this year, and CSS Micro Machines was aimed at snowboarders and skiers under 12, looking at getting the next generation of riders involved in the revolutionary competition. This Wednesday also sees the final round of video edits from this year’s CSS released at midday. The battle for the top spot in Championship Snowboard and Championship Ski will then be decided, with the winning team taking home a cheque for £2000 and the runner up £1000, kindly donated by sponsors The Snowboard Asylum, Ellis Brigham and Delancey. Half of the prize money must be reinvested into each freestyle scene, allowing each facility to develop their offering to nuture talent.

Lesley McKenna, GB Park and Pipe Programme Manager was delighted with how CSS has gone in year one: “Championship Ski and Snowboard is such a great project. Not only does it encourage people to get involved and learn new tricks that they can then showcase to the Park & Pipe world but it also supports the facilities to develop better freestyle setups and is an important step in the GB Park & Pipe Performance Pathway.

“We can see that the technical standard of both the skiing and snowboarding has risen instantly and we have see multiple new tricks from many of the riders. It is already proving a fantastic way to identify up and coming riders, and we are proud to be supporting the grassroots of UK freestyle snowsports in the UK.

Round 3 of Championship Ski & Snowboard League released

It's Round 3 in the Championship Ski & Snowboard league and things are getting competitive as the competition heats up.

First up are the CSS skiers, and GB Park & Pipe head ski coach, Pat Sharples, is looking forward to what the young riders can come up with:

"Real excited for round 3 as i just think we're going to keep seeing more creativity and bigger tricks. A huge well done to everyone involved."

Currently top of the leaderboard in the CSS ski league is Hemel; and Bearsden is top of the CSS snowboard league. Both teams have won all their battles thus far and therefore have achieved the maximum of 9 points. At the end of Round 3, Chris McCormick is ranked as the top skier of the compettion, and his brother, Matt is ranked as the top snowboarder.

Championship Ski and Snowboard launch two new one-off events for UK indoor and dry slope scene

GB Park and Pipe’s domestic snowsports league, Championship Ski and Snowboard (CSS), has today announced two one-off competitions following the huge demand to be part of CSS from UK indoor and dry slopes across the country.

CSS Battle Royale is aimed at slopes that were not able to be part of the CSS League this year, and CSS Micro Machines, aimed at snowboarders and skiers under 12, will mean even more rising stars of the British ski and snowboard scene will be able to be part of the hottest new element of UK snowsports.

CSS Battle Royale is a one off CSS match open to any slope not part of the CSS League this year. Coach/Managers are invited to enter either a team of 3, which must include at least one female. Each team member will have the chance to film and submit their best kicker trick, rail trick, and ex trick. As well as awards being made for Gold, Silver, and Bronze teams, the top slopes will be considered for invite into next year’s CSS League.

Josie McNamara from CSS said about the launch of Battle Royale:

“When we started searching for teams for CSS, we had so many teams all over the country wanting to take part. It was hard to turn them away so Battle Royale is a way for everyone to have a chance of getting involved with the CSS format. It should also indicate who the super motivated crews are around the UK which should help when we come to draw up the 2017 CSS league.”

For the under 12 riders, a brand new competition specifically for the groms has been set up called CSS Micro Machines competition. Coach/Managers or parents are invited to enter any under 12 skiers or snowboaders by submitting video footage of their best kicker trick and rail trick. All footage will then be judged, edited and released in September and there will be prizes and awards for the best girl and best boy from snowboard and from ski.

McNamara went onto comment about the new CSS Micro Machines competition:

“Micro Machines has come about because we have been blown away about the amount of groms and super groms taking part in CSS. We reckon there are even more out there that we don't even know about so Micro Machines is a way for those kids to get involved in CSS. Hopefully it will be a nice project over the schools holidays as any kid under 12 can enter! They just need to send us a kicker trick and a rail trick. It's a stripped back version of CSS but we are so excited to see what footage we get back!”

Round 2 of Championship Ski & Snowboard League is now live

BBC’s Ed Leigh and Head Coach of GB Park and Pipe’s Ski Team, Pat Sharples, give the low down on who are the current rising stars of British skiing and snowboarding as round two of Championship Ski and Snowboard (CSS) goes live.

With competition hotting up between the teams, and some of the senior GB Park and Pipe squad deciding to get in on the action, Championship Ski and Snowboard is clearly demonstrating how British riders are pushing the boundaries on the artificial slopes and indoor snow centres.

The lowdown on Championship Skiing from Pat Sharples:

“I think the main thing that have stood out for me is the talent of the up and coming young guns, especially some of the girls who have all been submitting some technical tricks with a lot of style in their riding. The level of riding coming from National Academy skiers at Bearsden has been very much on point!

Overall the skiers are performing high levels tricks in both directions, with style, solid grabs and good execution on landings, which is pretty much everything the judges want to see! It is great to see all the teams taking full advantage of the their home slopes and getting the best out of the features.

And what rumours are there ahead of Round 2? Apparently after seeing Round 1, Anna Vincenti and Murray Buchan signed for Bearsden and Madi Rowlands has signed for Hemel! Let’s see what the GB Park & Pipe team members can bring to CSS in future rounds!”

The lowdown on Championship Snowboarding from Ed Leigh:

“Championship Ski and Snowboard has already proved itself to be the best way to catch a glimpse of Britain’s best domestic talent. The standard is gold seal and well worth checking out.

In the wake of some first round hammers getting thrown down, some of the stand outs for me were; Fin Bremner, the 16 year old riding for Aberdeen who deserves top billing for his back rodeo 900. It’s the first time it’s been seen in the UK. Also impressing is Matt McCormick from Bearsden, who currently leads on kickers after he opened his section with a lovely switch back 9, and finished with a mind melting inward/backside barrel roll as his EX trick.

Looking ahead to round two, which is now live, it could be that the Young Guns are the secret weapon in CSS. Braehead lead with young gun Leon Drynan playing a pivotal role but close behind is Bearsden who have Lewis Moore, another 12 year old who has broken into the top 8 kicker riders.

After their loss to Braehead, Hemel have flexed their not inconsiderable muscle and secured the signatures of Jamie Nicholls and Aimee Fuller for Round 2. Bearsden have also been busy on the transfer front and they now boast Katie Ormerod and Rowan Coultas, however, there are still some of the GB Park and Pipe Team who haven’t signed up yet. Billy Morgan anyone?”

The first videos from GB Park and Pipe’s new concept in snowsports competition, Championship Ski and Snowboard, are now live as round one of the nationwide competition concludes.

Championship Ski and Snowboard (CSS), which will grow and nurture young British freestyle talent, is the first snowsports competition of its kind in the world, and after launching in May, the first round is now live. Watch the videos now to see which teams came out on top!

The CSS concept is the brainchild of Hamish McKnight, head snowboard coach of the GB Park and Pipe Team, who wanted to create a platform where young freestyle talent could be showcased and allowed to thrive. CSS provides a competition structure that supports what lies at the heart of the core scene - doing tricks, having fun and being able to show them off to everyone.

Filming for the next round of Championship Ski and Snowboard has already begun, with the videos and results being available in early July. After five rounds, the teams who come out top of the CSS leaderboard will claim a cash prize donated by the Snowboard Asylum, Ellis Brigham and Delancey to be spent on the development of freestyle at their slope. They will also have the kudos of being crowned “best scene in Great Britain”.

Championship Ski & Snowboard to nurture British freestyle talent

A new concept in snowsports competition, which will grow and nurture British freestyle talent, has been launched today by the GB Park & Pipe team. The first snowsports competition of its kind in the world, Championship Ski and Snowboard (CSS), is a brand new competition league where crews representing local slopes will go head to head with other teams from across the UK.

CSS will see crews submit videos of their best tricks filmed at their local indoor or dryslope scene. Footage will then be judged, scored and edited into “matches” which will then be live on the CSS website and shared across social media.

The CSS concept is the brainchild of Hamish McKnight, head snowboard coach of the GB Park and Pipe Team, who wanted to create a platform where young freestyle talent could be showcased and allowed to thrive. CSS will provide a competition structure that supports what lies at the heart of the core scene - doing tricks, having fun and being able to show them off to everyone.

The league, which will be judged by international level judges, provides the opportunity for freestyle snowsport communities to compete against each other, without the cost of having to travel to competitions. Teams can win prizes, which include a new feature for their slope and the kudos of being crowned “best scene in Great Britain”, and the top teams will be invited to the live finals taking place at major UK ski and snowboard events in October.

Lesley McKenna, GB Park and Pipe Team Manager said of the launch: “The GB Park & Pipe team has shown itself to be able to take on the best in the world. There is a really deep wealth of talent following in the footsteps of the current team and CSS will ensure that in years to come this talent will continue to come through and be able to challenge at the very top level. CSS is an essential link between the proven top level GB Park & Pipe team and the grassroots in the UK.”

Hamish McKnight, Head Snowboard Coach for GB Park and Pipe said: “CSS embodies everything that has been missing from UK freeski and freestyle snowboarding over the past few years. But most of all, my idea for CSS was starting something that should just be great fun.”

Championship Ski and Snowboard will begin in May and run until the live finals in October, with teams consisting of four riders, including one female and one young gun who is under 15, as well as two others.
