Message from the BSS Performance Director

I am pleased to announce the publication of the Olympic Qualifying Standards for nomination to the British Olympic Association (BOA) for the Sochi 2014 Team GB.

The BOA placed exacting guidelines upon us, as they have done with all winter sports, and demanded evidence to support the target of 'credible performance'.

This has been an enormous task for our staff, coaches and athletes.  As BSS we represent 49% of the total Olympic medal offering, which translates into 13 Olympic disciplines.  We are currently active within 10 individual disciplines and have athletes capable of competing at World Level (within the World Top 20) within some of those disciplines.

Most importantly, I would personally like to thank all those who have contributed and especially to those coaches and performance staff who have burnt much midnight oil.

Furthermore, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all snowsport athletes, coaches and support staff that we are approaching the 12 month countdown to Sochi.  It is at this point that we need to keep our processes simple and clear.  We need to maintain health and well-being to give us the best chance of operating at our best come February 7th 2014.

Traditionally I should wish you luck. Luck is more about relying upon chance and superstition.  Hence, I would rather use the words of the one of the most successful US College wrestling coaches, John Jesse,

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

Therefore if the current levels of work are sustained we will achieve great things.

So grip it and rip it for Team GB nomination.

Warm regards,

Paddy Mortimer
