About British Ski and Snowboard Ltd

British Ski and Snowboard (BSS) is the National Governing Body for Skiing and Snowboarding in the United Kingdom. It is recognised by the International Ski Federation (FIS) and by the British Olympic Association. We manage the elite British teams and the development pathway for those elite teams. We provide development programs in four FIS disciplines; alpine skiing, cross country, freestyle, and snowboarding. We also licence competitors in telemark, speed skiing and ski jumping.

We work closely with Clubs, Academies and Home Nations to provide opportunities for aspiring international athletes. We have between 300 and 400 athletes registered to compete in international events.

History

British Ski and Snowboard was formed in February 2010 when the previous Governing organisation ran into serious difficulties. The British Olympic Association stepped in and launched the new organisation to ensure that Athletes within the FIS disciplines who were already in the preparation camps for the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver could actually compete. Without the new organisation and recognition from FIS this would not have been possible.

BSS raised funds from personal donors, commercial sponsors and some government and lottery money to fund the support team for the Athletes in Vancouver. Fund raising continued after the conclusion of the Vancouver Olympic Games and previous supporters of the Alpine Senior and Alpine Children's and Junior teams decided to back the new entity.

Aims, Challenges and Funding

British Ski and Snowboard aims to see British skiers and riders on the podiums at world events in the next four to eight years. We would like to challenge for medals at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014. We expect to achieve medal success at the Winter Olympic Games by 2018. We have tremendous young prospects across all of our disciplines and we have to create the opportunities for them to put them on the path to success.

However, like most success stories we need to invest in the correct opportunity at the right time. At present we receive very little from government or lottery funds. We are fortunate to have great backing from a small number of commercial enterprises and some generous individuals. We need more! In return we can offer a variety of brand awareness opportunities, unrivalled corporate entertainment and hospitality packages and corporate and social responsibility prospects.
